  5. Technological innovations have vastly improved our standard of living. From simple tools carved of rock or bone to airplanes and super computers, the benefits and uses of technology are endless. Through technology we have experienced increased productivity, communication, and medical advancement; however, we have become so overwhelmed with it that many of us are now experiencing a technology overload. This has brought about many adverse effects, several of which can easily be identified in modern society. There are many sure signs of technology overload; experiencing feelings of anxiety or nervousness when you’re unable to use basic technology (e.g. Internet or Cellular Phone for) for a short periods of time, overusing technology to the point where it has negative impacts on your physical or mental health, or allowing your use of technology to detriment aspects of your professional, personal, or academic life. These may seem to be difficult problems but I believe the answer is both obvious and easily achievable: limit our use of technology.
By structuring our lives or daily processes to have as limited a dependency on technology as is feasibly possible, we can enable ourselves function more efficiently while avoiding some of the negative effects of technology overload. As a society, we can establish rules or guidelines for the responsible use of technology such that people are given greater awareness to the possible harmful effects of technology overload and ways to combat it. A similar trend was seen with the development of ergonomically efficient hardware and even seating positions and if a similar approach was taken for technology overload, eliminating it would be simple indeed. I suggest trying to create a balance and deal with it, by practicing a technology Sabbath for one day a week. If simple steps like this are taken, then technology overload is easily dealt with. A person need only take short breaks from cell phone usage, the internet or simply a computer, regardless of your methods, technology overload is easily treatable.
